*** ANTIQUE WOOD CARVING TOOL SET *** COMPLETE 12-PIECE SHAMROCK BRAND MARPLES CARVING TOOLS, SET No. 60 Manufactured Pre-1950’s by W.M. Marples & Sons, Hibernia Works, Sheffield, England This is a Vintage Marples carving tools set of twelve shamrock brand, catalogue No.60 Rosewood handles with brass ferrules, blades manufactured from Sheffield Tool Steel. This set was produced prior to the 1950’s in Sheffield, England. Although the research I've done on these tool sets have shown the nature of the insignias on the blades were used between 1930-1940, so this specific tool set may be much older than pre-1950's. Several of the pieces which have enough space on the blade are marked with the company’s three-shamrock insignia & name - “Marples & Sons, Sheffield, England”. I believe the twelve pieces are as follows: 1 x 15mm straight shallow gouge,1 x 12mm straight shallow gouge,1 x 13mm straight deep gouge,1 x 10mm straight gouge,1 x 7mm straight gouge,1 x 4mm straight gouge,1 x 2mm veiner tool,1 x 14mm square end chisel (bevelled on both sides),1 x 9mm skew chisel,1 x 7.5mm vee tool,1 x 7mm curved shallow gouge,1 x 4mm spoon chisel. (This is a description which I’ve found to be accurate with all the other No. 60 Marples sets that I’ve checked out, though this information listed above may not reflect exactly the same set which I am selling. I am not a professional wood worker so my knowledge is limited.) This set is in excellent condition and is complete with the original wooden storage box containing the owner’guide, rust preventitive paper & sharpening stone. Only two or three of these tools appear to have any signs of useage whatsoever (the rear of the handles appear to have been tapped with a mallet). Each tool measures from 8-3/4" inches long to 9-3/4" inches long. The tools themselves are spotless. If you look carefully at the scanned images I’ve posted notice the crotch of each blade just above the handle, the dark spots on some of the blades are not dirt, or rust. These are the forging marks left behind from the manufacturing process. It’s tough to find any imperfections on any of the blades. They are all razor-sharp without any noticeable wear or damage to the cutting edges. The rosewood handles are also of exceptional quality and due to International conservative efforts many variations of rosewood have been banned from purchase or export; making any products made with the rare breed of wood increasingly valueable. I’ve tried to photograph & scan as many images of these tools as I could, and I still have more photos & images that are not posted. I've added one photo of the case alone and it is in rough, weathered condition from being stored in a hot & dry area for more than 60 years.
