This is a beautiful and charming item with a story. It actually consists of 2 items, an early unfinished sampler and a magnificent wooden gilt edged frame. The little girl of the family was not able to finish her sampler but her loving family treasured it and framed it accordingly, mounting it on a paper backing and putting it into a magnificent frame. T are areas of age staining and wear so the sampler may in fact be much earlier than the frame, but the frame is nice and old as well, with a wooden board backing containing square nails. The frame looks like a dark oak or walnut, with a black oustide rim and a gilt inside rim. T are all the tiny chips and losses (most notably at the corner of the gilt edge) you would expect to find in an antique frame but I don't think they detract, they just add character, and this is priced accordingly. The frame is 23 1/2 inches wide by just over 11 inches high. The sampler itself is about 17 inches by 8 inches. This looked wonderful over my fireplace for 20 or so years but we are reorganizing, redecorating, and clearing out 25 years of accumulation of stuff. With a low opening bid and no reserve you can just have fun with this and grab a bargain. Either the sampler or the frame alone is worth much more than the opening bid.
