AntiqueSeth Thomas Time & Strike Mantel Clock - 'Beehive' Style Mahogany Case - 120 Movement Up for auction is an elegant Antique Seth Thomas 'Beehive' Style Mantel Clock from the early part of the 1900's. This is a smaller sized Seth Thomas Clock made of mahogany wood which cosmetically is in wonderful condition. The components of the clock are all very clean and they have been wonderfully maintained over the years however the movement is not in working order and the reason that the movement is not currently in working condition is that the mainsprings on both the time and strike side need replacing. The movement itself is in very good condition. After re-discovering this clock on one of my recent 'picking adventures' here in New Hampshire I brought it home and tried to wind the clock. As I wound both the time and strike arbors, I could hear the mainsprings momentarily engaging but they quickly release because they have broken at one point in time. I will one day learn how to change a mainspring or adjust a clock so that I can 'fix' relatively simple issues that I encounter with various clocks that I come across but for the time being, I simply enjoy finding clocks as such (along with other great 'treasures') and my hopes are that someone will be able to repair the clocks that I find which are in need of some attention an bring them back to running condition so that they can be enjoyed once again. I removed the movement from the case to inspect its condition and as you can see by the photographs it is in very good condition (other than the mainsprings...). The brass movement is clearly marked on the back plate with the following: ST MADE IN U.S.A. 120 The Seth Thomas 120 movement is a time and strike, 8-Day movement which strikes the gong coil once on the half hour and again on the hour with the corresponding number of hours. The pendulum is a solid lead bob which has a formed sheet of polished brass on one side which is in excellent condition. The mahogany case is also in wonderful condition. There are no cracks, breaks or previous repairs on the case and other than the smallest 'nip' or two in the wood from being bumped (almost not even noteworthy), the case is just about perfect. The original finish has a perfect even crazing to it which gives this petite clock a wonderful look and appeal. The brass bezel has a very nice lusterous shine and it holds a thicker piece of convex and beveled glass which has a light aqua glow around the outer edge under certain light conditions. The Seth Thomas metal dial has black incised hour numerals which are a wonderful contrast against the silver dial. There is minor tarnish around the outter rim of the metal dial as you can see in the photographs however this is minimal and it takes nothing away from this wonderful little clock. There was a key which was found with the clock and though I don't believe it to be the original, it does fit both winding arbors correctly and it is included (though not photographed) with this auction.
