OrnateSheathed Antique Sterling Scissors English * Circa 1830 These wonderfully ornate sterling silver (tested) handled embroidery scissors and their sterling sheath are at least 175 years old. The shanks and bows are modeled with oak leaves and acorns. Scrolls and leaves decorate the sheath which is a nice, snug fit. They were made in England in the early 19th century, probably by Joseph Taylor of Birmingham. They have tight blades, sharp points and cut well, right to the tips. The silver on both scissors & sheath is in excellent condition with no dents, splits or other damage. The scissors have an old repair below the bow on one side, but it was well done and is hard to see. They're sturdy and strong and the steel is in fabulous condition with the original polished surface. The scissors measure 3 1/2" long. There's a good chance they were once part of a boxed set of tools. Similar scissors are shown in the sets on pp. 128-129 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools & Embroideries.
