~ ANTIQUE / VINTAGE SHIP'S BINNACLE OIL LAMP� ~ This auction is for a lamp that has a very specific purpose. � People mistakenly call these railroad lamps, mining lights etc. � They are specifically made to fit into enclosures on on or two sides of the ship's binnacle (described below), which held the ships compass. � This allowed the captain or the helmsman to see the navigational equipment in the dark while sailing. They are frequently made of brass and copper, which are non-magnetic and will not affect the accuracy of the compass. � There are holes in the base of the canister to allow sea water to drain away from the inner lamp, protecting the precious navigational flame. � This lamp is in excellent condition as the pictures show. � It may be unfired, or it was extremely well cared for and cleaned. � I have no provenance or history on this piece, but I do know that these lamps were used from the mid 1800's till just after the turn of the century. � I have tried to display it well in the pictures for your review and have described it to the best of my ability. � The following is a description of the binnacle in more detail: A� binnacle � is a waist-high case or stand on the� deck � of a� ship , generally mounted in front of the� helmsman , in which navigational instruments are placed for easy and quick reference as well as to
