Antique Spectrometer by Philip Harris Ltd ofBirmingham This is a large instrument, made of black painted metal and brass with a tripod base. There are two brass tubes, each approx. 20cm (8”) long. The eye piece tube is extendable by up to 10cm (4”) and has a sliding lens for focusing, and is attached to the main body with a ‘rocker’ hinge. The other tube has an attachment at the end with a variable slit created by a sliding plate. The lacquer is in good condition, with just a few scratches commensurate with age. The whole instrument stands at 23cm (9”) high. It is contained in a mahogany dovetailed wooden case, measuring 25cm (11”) wide x 22cm (9”) deep x 28cm (11”) high, with a hinged door that opens at the front and a metal carry handle on the top. Note: there is slight chipping on one side of the prism, but this should not affect viewing. Historical note: Philip Harris Ltd was originally based in the Digbeth area of the city and started by Thomas Ellis, a Surgeon, in 1817. At that time the person Philip Harris would have been only 15 or 16 years old. He joined Ellis in 1825.
