Up for auction is an antique deck of Steamboat No. 999 double heads playing cards, manufactured by The Russel & Morgan Company, Cincinatti, OH. I do believe these cards are from the late 1800's before the United States Playing Card Company bought them. That would make it a very rare deck, indeed. Although not in perfect condition by a long stretch, the deck is complete. I guess it's pretty obvious what the bad news is, the Joker has a slice off the corner and the 7 of Hearts is torn as pictured. However, when you look at the rest of the deck, it's not too bad when you consider that they are well over 100 years and were simple heavy stock paper that was not coated. They do have indicies, but the fact that they are very small indicate the earliest use of indicies. I could be wrong, but if memory serves, indicies started around 1885, so I place this deck similar between 1885 and 1895. The box is trashed, no top, taped tears, but it has kept the deck in decent condition. I'm actually amazed that someone kept the sliver of 7 of Hearts and didn't try to tape it together. It's the kind of layered tear that I believe a professional could actually fix. Standard size deck at 3 1/2 " x 2 1/2". Oh yeah, did I mention the Joker - I guess that was politically correct for the times. No Reserve. and Terms: Will ship within 72 hrs. upon receipt of read more
