Antique Sterling Silver Engine Turn Decorated Hair Brush & Vanity Mirror from Birmingham dated 1919 The Antique Mirror measures approximately 11 1/4 inches or 286 mm in length, it is just over 1 1/8 inches or 30 mm across the width of its handle and it is 5 1/2 inches or 140 mm across the widest part of its body. The Hair Brush measures approximately 10 3/8 inches or 264 mm in length by just over 1 1/8 inches or 30 mm across the width of its handle and it is 2 7/8 inches or 74 mm across the width of the brush back. The brush and mirror are both made from a sterling silver bodies that have been superbly engine turn engrave decorated within a decorative outer border, the mirror still has its original circular bevel edged looking glass or mirror that has is held in place by a sterling silver outer bezel and the brush has an oval wooden back block the the bristles are fitted into, the brush and mirror have a combined weight of 426.5 grams and the central back of both the brush and mirror has a delightful oval shaped cartouche that has Not been engraved with a previous owners initials or family monogram all as photographed below, the bodies of both the brush and mirror have been impressed with matching English sterling silver hallmarks that read as follows, H & H Ld - Anchor - Lion Passant - u H & H Ld is the Birmingham silversmith or makers mark of Hasset & Harper Ltd, the Anchor is the mark of the Birmingham assay office, the Lion Passant is the mark of English 925 standard sterling silver and the letter u is the date letter for 1919. The condition is very used and fairly good for their age. The brush and mirror have No Splits, No Cracks, No Holes and No Repairs that I can find, the mirror or looking glass is in good condition with no chips and no cracks, the bristles on the brush are in excellent condition, the brush and mirror bodies are straight, the decoration is crisp, the silver hallmarks are partially rubbed in places but still legible although as this hair brush and vanity mirror are used antiques they both have several dents to their silver bodies along with some surface marks and wear from use and the mirror or looking glass has some minor foxing that does not affect its use, they have the patina of age that is to be expected and a gentle clean would enhance them greatly. Personally I think that this antique hair brush and vanity mirror can still be used today and that they would make a good addition to any collection, I also think that they would look very stylish on a dressing table and that they have a delightful shabby chic look about them considering that they are almost 100 years old.
