Small antique crock/stoneware jug or bottle marked "Mercury" in blue under the glaze. Bottle is two-tone with a dark brown top and a light tan bottom. In the 1800's mercury was commonly used for the treatment of Syphilis, also used for amalgam dental fillings. Mercury was also used in gold prospecting. Applied to a sheet of copper, the gold would collect on the copper, and later burned off, leaving the gold dust. Later bottles were marked poison. Antique Mercury Pottery Jug / Crock. This is the smaller mercury jug which is a bit more rare than it's larger kin. Measures 5 inches high. Diameter at base is 3 inches wide, and has the number 5 on the bottom.
