*****NO SHIPPING JULY 11-19***** thank you!!! Here is a rare antique tin box...after much research I have seen only one other like it on the internet. This box depicts a scene from GUSTAV HAGENBECK'S INDIEN (Indian) SHAU ( show), 1905-1906. The box is likely from that period, but age is unknown. During that time Hagenbeck and his brother Carl produced circuses and "Peoples Shows" ("volkershau") like this one. Also termed "human zoos", these were public exhibitions of so-called "exotic" people collected from all over and paraded throughout Europe. Included were people from India (as this tin shows), but also eskimos, laplanders, African pygmies, bushmen, American Indians, etc. These "exotic" people performed tricks, acrobatics, juggling, making crafts, traditional dancing, etc. for European gawkers. This is a very nice tin featuring a not-so-nice part of history where racism was everywhere and was part of the norm. This souvenir tin is in excellent condition for its age: the metal is discolored with age but the vivid litho graphics are only slightly aged with minimal scratches.
