Here we have an Antique J. R. TOLMAN, Ship Builders or Shipwrights Mast / Spar Woodworking Plane. Joseph Robinson Tolman was a ship joiner and plane maker in Boston, MA from 1818-1841 and in Hanover, MA from 1849-1860. The toe of the plane is marked by the maker of the plane (note that his first initial went off the edge of the body). The heel is marked 8/8 (or 1"), which is the width of the cut. These curved bottom planes were use d to smooth out the round surfaces on mast and spars on the old wooden sailing vessels and are still used today. The body is in good 'used' condition with nicks, etc. (see pics). There are 2 old nail/screw holes on each side of the body, down by the sole, which were probably for previously attached fences. The sole is good with a couple of age-related cracks and some chips. The mouth is good and opened a bit to assist in chip removal. There is a little bruising on the heel of the body and the top of the wedge. The full length 1" wide cutting iron set has matching top edges and is made by MOULSON BROTHERS. Plane is approx. 9-1/2"L x 1-3/4"W. O. A. CLARK owner's mark.** Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. :-)
