The long side of the box reads SMALL ARMS AMUNITION FACTORY LOADED SHOT GUN âe" PAPER CARTRIDGES MANUFACTURED BY THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO BRIDGEPORT CONN. U.S.A. The short side of the box reads U.M.C 500 12 GA NEW CLUB FACTORY LOADED SHELLS 100 3 Drs. Hazard Powder History It is said that the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC) was originally formed, by Marcellus Hartley, to provide firearms and ammunition to the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. UMC was later reincorporated in the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1867. UMC began to sell unloaded brass shotshells in 1868, which is said to be the first commercially available shotshell in the USA. Twenty years later, in 1888, UMC began to sell loaded shotshells.
