Antique Victorian Shell Cameo of **PSYCHE c.1870-80 10K Gold Mount Truly one of the nicest vameos I have sold in some time...This is an exquisite genuine shell cameo depicting the Greek Goddess, Psyche, the Bride of cupid. Psyche is generally identified by a butterfly wing in her hair, which is used to symbolize the soul. On this unusual cameo, an additional butterfly can also be seen on Psyche's right shoulder. It is a lovely carving, done with considerable skill and attention to detail. Not a flat piece, the shell is carved using the natural flow of the shell. It is slightly domed with variations in height and depth. T are no hairlines or cracks in the shell. A few natural inclusions (lighter areas on the shell) can be seen at the back when held to the light. The lovely mount, tests to be 10K Gold (not marked) and does not appear to be bent or damaged in any way. It has what appears to be its original tube-hinge, c-clasp and extended pin stem (somewhat loose). Measures a generous, 2" long x 1.50" wide The goddess Psyche started out as a mortal, but one of exquisite grace and beauty. Fervently courted by numerous mortal men and gods, Psyche truly wasn't interested in romance and she wasn't just playing hard to get!
