Two carved columns, one on each side. This beautiful carved oak wellington chest was crafted in England during the Victorian period, around 1890. The oak has aged very well and really looks great. All of the carvings are fully intact with no breaks or chips, and it has developed a lovely patina. The right side of this chest has a column of carving which is on hinges and swings over the edge of the drawer fronts. This way when it is shut and locked, the drawers cannot be pulled open. This design is found only on true, original Wellington chests, and is a great indicator of the age and authenticity of the piece! Although the key for this chest has been lost over the years, the column still swings back and forth easily on its hinges. Each of the five drawers features hand-cut dovetailed joints and a beautifully carved lion's face, which doubles as the pull. Again, read more
