Here is a very attractive antique Victorian gilt brass or bronze gothic casket depicting medieval style scenes on all sides and the lid. Thi s casket has the makers mark for Adolph Frankau and Company on the base. The scenes seem to depict various scenes from medieval life, with figures on horseback and some playing chess etc. Each side has different scenes. The box is lined with deep red velvet, which now has some wear to the pile. This box is heavy as it is made of solid brass, or possibly bronze. It has a gilt finish - remaining on the sides, but now worn from the top (which has a polished brass finish) . There are various versions of these caskets, and this one is unusual for having the makers mark "AFC" in a raised hexagon under the base. It is a little tarnished underneath and there is some old polish residue on some of the panels on the lid. There is some wear to the gil t fini sh and some wear to the pile of the v el vet lining. There is a tab closure, and a lock, but no key. The lid closes securely and the hinges are sound. The box measures 5.6 inches ( 14.3 cm) long, 2.6 inches ( 6.2 cm) high and 3.1 inches (1 7.6 cm) wide. The box weighs around 850 grams, before packaging, hence the postage cost....
