ANTIQUE VICTORIAN SILVER LUCKY HORSE SHOE BROOCH 1899 The late Victorian Period is known as the Aesthetic Period or Movement (1880-1901) was a direct response to the over indulgent fashions and to the stuffy formality and strict protocol of the Grand Period. During the Aesthetic Period a sense of fun and light heartedness returned to jewelry. Whimsical motifs such as griffins and dragons, crescent moons and stars, butterflies and salamanders, were crafted into jewels of astounding beauty. This is a superb example of the period. A wonderful bar brooch which is decorated with an applied horse shoe and pierced scroll detail. A symbolic piece which is a good luck token - maybe for a rider or for a lady who attended horse race mettings. It measures 4.2cm x 1cm. It has an original clasp and pin and is hallmarked with the Birmingham assay mark for 1899 and WL for William Lewis of Birmingham. Supplied in a box. A wonderful piece of social history.
