In our travels, we are constantly in search of exceptional examples of the quilter's art. Our favorites are not always the finest museum pieces, but rather fabulous prairie-style quilts that we refer to as TRUE TEXAS FOLK ART. What we would like to provide is a place to stop-over, sip a cup of "java", get a little history and Texas culture lesson to boot...and then hopefully purchase a piece that will let the sunshine into your heart when you open the box on arrival. From rural East Texas African-American estates, the quilts I'm listing tonight are stunning pieces of textile FOLK-ART. I've been asked several times recently "what's the deal with all the African-American quilts in East Texas"...and I'd like to address that issue tonight. In the book THE QUILTS OF GEE'S BEND published by Tinwood Books, if you will refer to Page 9 in the Introduction, it says "The study invites a question: If at Gee's Bend, then w else might one find such a deep well of art within the black South? What more could we learn of other unknown quilting communities in the South, or of the already familiar ones in EASTERN TEXAS, western and central Louisiana, the Mississippi Delta, northern Florida, and elsew?". We are lucky enough to live within the old Black Bible Belt of East Texas. Small black communities like Fouke (pronounced "folk") in Wood County, and Winn in Van Zandt County (which was called the Free State of Van Zandt during post-Civil War times) have produced these wonderful old art quilts for many generations. Also larger cities in East Texas like Marshall, Jacksonville, Nacogdoches (the oldest town in Texas w Stephen F. Austin arrived with the first 14 pioneer families close to two hundred years ago) have a large black population maintained for generations -- the descendents of cotton and sugar cane plantation-workers. So we are privileged to have access to the "treasures" that have started to emerge from proud families that realize their textile art is worthy of sharing with the rest of the world. The adoption and protection of these valuable pieces is a noble service, and I want my buyers to know that we appreciate each and every one of you that "see" the art value, the important heritage behind them, and the absolute necessity of future preservation...and it is imperative that we continue down the path.
