Vintage George Hummel's Celebrated Essence of Coffee tin. saw one of these in a museum in Ft. Worth, Tx. and they claimed this tin to be from the civil war era. I don't know. I can find no dates on this tin. It is covered with paper that has no tears in the paper. It states that is was manufactured and for sale by Jewett & Sherman Co. Milwaukee, Wis. It gives directions for mixing in english and what I believe to be German. It offers a 5000 dollar reward if a better essence of coffee can be found. Also, it states that it is approved by Dr Booth and Dr Chilton, two of the first practical chemists in the United States, also by several other prominent chemists. The tin is 3 1/16 inches tall and has a diameter of 2 1/8 inches. No holes in tin, lid comes off easily. The paper does have a lot of brown blotches . I have had this tin for many years. I have never attempted to clean it. Satisfaction guaranteed. Shipped with delivery confirmation.
