Superb Antique Wedgwood Jasperware portrait medallion of Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, the exceedingly important nineteenth century British/Scottish botanist, explorer, and plant collector, author of numerous important botanical texts. Wedgwood actually modelled portrait medallions of Hooker twice, one with Hooker facing left and the other with him facing right and this is a left facing example, obviously. Wedgwood's Hooker portrait is uber-rare, Robin Reilly [p. 369 in "Wedgwood Jasper", Thames & Hudson, 1989] advises that it is one of the Uncatalogued Portraits, known principally through a reference in an old Wedgwood Pricing Book. Further, the background in the Hooker portrait is Green, as shown, [highly suitable for a Botanist] and I believe this is extremely rare. This example from the estate of a very advanced Dallas Wedgwood collector. Well marked as shown on the back with the "Wedgwood" impressed mark and with no other marks visible [though I didn't examine it out of the frame and some additional marks may be hidden by the frame]. Touch is fairly light on the mark and it doesn't show up to well in the pics. It can be clearly read in person, however, and this piece is unconditionally guaranteed fully marked and authentic. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame, but all visible areas in *excellent* condition, as shown. T is a tiny read more
