Antoine Barye Bronze Lion Serpent Snake Sculpture/ "Lion au Serpent" 19th C Rare Barbedienne Foundry mark."Antoine-Louis Barye (1796 -- 1875) was a French sculptor most famous for his work as an animalier, a sculptor of animals. Born in Paris, Barye began his career as a goldsmith, like many sculptors of the Romantic Period. But it was not until 1823 that he discovered his true predilection from watching the animals in the Jardin des Plantes, making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings then modelling them in sculpture on a large or small scale. He was made Professor of Drawings at the Museum of Natural History in 1854, and was elected to the Academie des beauz-arts in 1868. No new works were produced by Barye after 1869. The mass of admirable work left by Barye entitles him to be regarded as one of the great animal life artists of the French school, and the refiner of this class of art."The statue is in excellent condition with no dents, dings or scratches and no signs of repair.The statue does have an adhesive label remanent about 3/4 inch by 1/4 inch which I have left on. It is signed "Barye" and also bears the F. Barbedienne foundry mark which most the reproductions on eBay do not bare which means this rare work dates to 1891 or before (Bayre's death - Barbedienne died in 1892 and the last large bronze of this work was
