Macbook Air (2012) 13.3" for saleI'm selling my Macbook Air. It's been a great computer since I bought it new. However I've upgraded to a brand new 2015 Macbook Pro. Thus, I need to sell off my old reliable Macbook Air.MODEL: This model is the Macbook Air 5,2 model, version A1466 which is the 13.3", 1.8GHz i5 CPU with 4 GB RAM and 128GB SSD. Please note the SSD was replaced with a 256GB Transcend JetDrive (see below).SSD: I upgraded the internal SSD from the original 128GB to 256GB with a Transcend JetDrive 520. The new drive is faster than the original SSD and you can occasionally notice the difference. In general the factory SSD is quite fast, and the upgraded one is larger and therefore performs better with streaming or linear access than the original. I installed the Transcend drive in August 2015.CPU: The CPU is the factory 1.8GHz Intel i5-3427U dual core (4 thread) CPU. It works perfectly, never overheats, and generally stays quiet and cool in almost all conditions. I heard the fans spin up once or twice in the three years I've owned the laptop.RAM: In almost all use cases, 4GB RAM will be perfectly fine. I used this laptop as-in with Logic Pro for my 20+ track projects that sometimes ran in the 2-4GB sizes. The 4 GB RAM and stock SSD worked perfectly fine. I outgrew the factory SSD, hence why I replaced it with a larger size. BATTERY: Replaced by Apple in February with a brand new one. See the pics for the exact cycle count (136). In my typical use case, the battery lasts basically all day. I got 7-8 hours out of it, which includes web browsing and VM usage. I work 12 hours shifts and I didn't bring my charger with me to work, knowing the laptop would last my whole shift.SCREEN: There are absolutely no problems with screen at all. No dead pixels, no bright or dark spots, no finger prints, no cracks. Bezel is excellent with a slight dent on the top left as mentioned prior.KEYBOARD: Keyboard is flawless with no problems with any keys. Keys are not noticeably worn. No missing, cracked or unreliable keys. Backlighting works as expected.GENERAL CONDITION: The general condition of this laptop is excellent. It's not perfect however, as there are typical scratches and a few small dents on the laptop case. I could not upload any more pictures but would be happy to email them if requested prior to bidding. Of note is a small 2mm dent on the front upper lid and case and a 2mm dent on the bottom of the case in the upper left corner. None of these dents are function problems; simply cosmetic issues. In the interest of full disclosure I can provide pics of the areas in question. Otherwise, the laptop is in excellent condition.PORTS: Two USB 3.0 ports and a Thunderbolt 1 port. The laptop also has a 3.5mm audio headphone jack. Finally a SDXC memory card slot is built in as well. I have never actually used this slot, but I have no reason to believe it is defective.OPERATING SYSTEM: I have formatted the SSD and installed Mac OS X 10.11. When you turn the laptop on, it will be boot El Capitan and you will see the Welcome and initial setup screen. I have included a USB drive with Mac OS X 10.11 and one with 10.10 on it. If you choose to install Yosemite you can boot the laptop using the OS X 10.10 USB stick and install that operating system. If you want the latest operating system form Apple, then you do not need to install anything - OS X 10.11 has already been installed by me and you can set it up as a fresh install once you start the laptop.PROBLEMS: In September of 2015, the Thunderbolt port stopped working. Technically it works, but it's unreliable and "positional"; that is, the plug works, and then doesn't work, depending on exactly what angle it's attached. Inspection at the Apple Store showed that the pins had been slightly bent. Unfortunately, the only repair viable is a logic board replacement. I was not inclined to replace it myself nor was I going to spend $400 to have Apple replaced it. Instead I upgraded to a brand new Macbook Pro.Please be aware that for all intents and purposes, the Thunderbolt port on this laptop is INOP. That is, the Thunderbolt port does not work. Please keep this in mind when bidding.The Thunderbolt port works depending on the angle of insertion for the Thunderbolt plug. In my opinion, this makes the port useless as I found no reliable way to plug in the cable that would ensure consistent function. All other ports work as expected.SUMMARY: This is a great laptop for anyone who wants a lightweight yet still functional and powerful computer system. It is in excellent cosmetic condition with a few dings from three years of daily usage. The thunderbolt port does not work. All other ports work as expected. I think that you can buy this laptop for hundreds less than a new one and have nearly all the functionality of a brand new one. The charger and charger cable are included, and of course work 100% without any problems at all.WHATS INCLUDED: This Macbook Air 2012, the charger, the charger extension cable and two USB flash drives with the OS 10.10 and 10.11 on them.
