He holds a fish whose organs were used for medicinal purposes and is thus a symbol of healing. Raphael's tunic is richly embroidered to show his high status as an archangel. The archangel Raphael is set over the spirits of men, and is commanded to heal the earth, which the fallen angels have defiled.
