This specimen is from the Chinle formation in northeastern Arizona, an area famous for its varied and brilliantly colored petrified wood. It dates back to the Triassic era and is of the extinct species of tree, araucarioxylon Arizonicum. The different colors are due to the different minerals present during the petrification process. It was photographed both wet and dry in natural light. Photos 1 & 2 are a side by side comparison of the wet/dry photos. It weighs about 17 lb. 5 oz. and measures about 8.5 x 7.25 x 3.5" . Enjoy this colorful fossil wood as part of your garden or outdoor living area decor or in your home or classroom.
