The Polar Bear Expedition is also known as the Northern Russian Expedition, the American North Russia Expeditionary Force - ANREF or the American Expeditionary Force North Russia - AEFNR. Purportedly, this is a provisional overprint applied to existing stocks of Russian stamps following the late WWI landing of about 5,000 U.S. troops in Arkhangelsk, Russia as part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War.
