Armed Civil War CDV of Captain Daniel Marston, Company C, 16th Maine Volunteer Infantry Up for auction is an Armed Civil War CDV of Captain Daniel Marston, a merchant from Phillips, Franklin County, Maine. Marston initially enlisted in Company D, 9th Maine Infantry from September of 1861 to August of 1862. He was discharged from the 9th Maine, and given a commission as Captain in Company C, 16th Maine Infantry. He is listed as being accidentally wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. I have not be able to find a detailed account of this wounding, but he is listed as such. Captain Marston is noted as being the last commanding officer of the 16th Maine Infantry after their annihilation on July 1st at Gettysburg. This CDV of Marston shows him with his sword, and officer's sash stretching across his torso, signifying "Officer of the Day." I have included a comparison image to this auction. The CDV is not inscribed, but it is without a doubt, Captain Marston. The comparison image is from the Maine State Archives Collection, and published in "The Faces of Gettysburg: Photographs from the Gettysburg National Military Park Library." This view is certainly rare, seated view of Capt. Marston as Officer of the Day.From the 16th Maine's Monument at Gettysburg: 16th ME. Inf'y 1st Brig. 2d Div. 1st Corps July 1st, 1863, read more
