Nice us Army Civil War Cavalry/Camel Corp eagle bell made of bronze measuring about 4.5 inches tall and just under 5 inches at the opening. It has an iron ball ringer. Also it has a nice golden color. This one has a small hole in the top"see pic"I have dug fragments of these myself in two different Central Ky camp areas...This is the medium size with the STAR on top like the one in Lord's Civil War collectors book giving the history of that particular bell"See pic"These were said to have started out in the Army Camel Corp in the 1850's and then later used in the Civil War.This is NOT the 1920s reproduction.Thoes are more crude in the casting process and the top has screws that hold on the strap holder. The strap holders on these are pressed in.Lookup Camel Corp in the web it's really a really interesting story.I have heard of several uses of these from them being tied to a line of horses in the pre electricity days of the Civil War in the pitch dark night so a horse could be located when needed.Or they could have been used on lines and used as alarm bells to warn of intruders in the edge of camp.Regular cow bells were used near Richmond,VA like this.A digger reported digging cow bells up every few feet apart several years back. These with the star on top are the most rare.Over all nice one!.Also the Travel channel "Mysteries At The Museum" read more
