The M-1 steel helmet was a revolutionary design, with a removable liner housing the suspension and sizing system. It quickly became THE iconic image of the unshaven, dogfaced GI of WW2. The earliest version of the M-1 helmet featured fixed bales to hold the chinstrap at each side, but these fixed bales often broke under hard use, so were quickly replaced with more practical swivel bales by late 1943. This US Army USMC Marine WW2 FIXED BALE M-1 STEEL COMBAT HELMET is in fair condition, with an old repainted OD exterior finish, the right chinstrap bale having broken off, the name "Bob" hand marked in green at the front crown, some scattered denting at the top crown, a small crack in the front left edge rim, a spot dent in the middle back edge rim, moderate surface chipping and patina at the top crown, the left crown, and the upper left front crown, moderate scattered scratching and soiling around the exterior, some surface chipping and patina at the interior top crown, some scattered patina around the interior, some scattered spot denting around the underside of the edge rim, the letters "CRC" hand applied in black marker at the underside of the front lip, missing the chinstraps, and with moderate overall age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the helmet is in fair shape, with no other damage to the tough steel construction. read more
