Jade Spirit ...a red earth painting ..r ai nb ow of color.. . ....a small (9"x9") oil, an exquisitely colorful, vibrant and detailed work of art.... based on a CHEN Da-fu original Artist : LI Xiao-ling. Young artist in Kunming, Yunnan, China. See "Provenance" below. Style : The style, including the rich colors, the flowing curves, the long neck, the rather stylized and angular features/posture, resembles early 20th century Art Nouveau . This is a recognized avant garde artistic style in China called "The Yunnan School", which originated in Yunnan Province, seen in paintings, tapestries, carving, porcelain, etc. It is also sometimes referred to as "Hong Tu Zhong Cai"..the "Red Earth Rich Color" School of Painting. The subjects are usually minority races of Yunnan Province in their native costumes. Anyone familiar with the Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt, will be be struck by the resemblence. We have collected many examples of this Yunnan School... paintings, woodprints, batik and dishes...some you may see on our other auctions.
