You are bidding on a stunning stoneware vase with flaring rim in all probability made by the Ashby Potters’ Guild in Derbyshire between 1909 and 1922. Covered in a streaked maroon and blue/grey glaze ( Note: flash photos make it look more blue/grey than it is ). The mark normally consisted of an oval containing the words ‘Ashby Guild’ but this is missing, although there are hints of it, as the base of the pot has been ground or sanded smooth possibly to remove a glaze run or adhering kiln debris. The Ashby Potters’ Guild was established in 1909 in Woodville, Derbyshire, by Pascoe Tunnicliffe (1881-1956). Tunnicliffe’s father, Edwin Rowland Tunnicliffe had taken over a ceramics factory known as Victoria Pottery in 1897 and produced a range of utilitarian household wares. The Ashby Potters’ Guild was formed to run alongside the more traditional business and intended to produce more high-end decorative wares. Thomas Camm, a stained glass artist from Smethwick , was in charge of design, while Pascoe Tunnicliffe developed the glazes and colourings. If this is one of their vases, it’s a rare opportunity as most Ashby Guild pieces you will find are in museums or private collections. Low starting price, so why not take a punt? 11.5cm high; 10.5cm at its widest. Excellent condition. Ignore any white streaks due to reflection. See my read more
