A One of a Kind Creation from The Edenwood Collection "Horse Before the Cart " One of the most wonderful things about Christmas, is bringing out our treasures that grow more dear to our hearts each & every year. It is my greatest hope that something that is born at Edenwood, from my hands and heart, evokes fond memories & becomes a cherished family heirloom. This Father Christmas, horse and cart is classic. I found the horse and fancy wagon at an antique store - not an antique as such ... one of those wonderful reproduction pieces that are made in that style. Of course, never being able to leave well-enough alone, I re-birthed the non-descript yellowish brown horse into what I thought that Santa would have/should have ... a Dapple Gray. That's my favorite breed of Santa-Horse. Perhaps because it reminds me of the stories from yesteryear, of the wooden carved rocking horses in the nurseries in England - or maybe because it looks especially nice with Christmas colors. At any rate, this handcarved wooden horse, was given a paint job. His saddle & saddle pad got some color and a decorative touch & the reins and bridle were added, because really, what was Santa supposed to hang on to? The cart just rests on the horse's back, so he can be unharnessed in an instant. Santa is created in my signature style - reminiscent of the vintage, Old World Father Christmas, with a gentle, benevolent face. His face and hands were created from stone clay, from my own sculpt - painted & antiqued. His beard is sheep's wool, his pants are wooly navy & his black boots have been sculpted from polymer. His hooded robe is particularly attractive - warm & cozy. It was made from a beautiful old white mohair/wool coat - kind of a shame to cut it up. Kind of. Santa will be wearing it far longer than anyone else would have. Everything in this piece is detachable (except the wreath) - making it especially fun for the children, to see something different in the back or Santa in another spot. He is gently poseable - he can drive the cart, stand and stretch his legs or go horseback riding. In the back, t is a unadorned tree, cut fresh from the forest, with a hint of ice crystals. T is a little girl, made in a similar style as Santa - a stone clay face that has been hand painted and antiqued. The mold that I made her lovely little face from, is an antique bisque doll that is at least 70 years old. She is wearing a red fuzzy hooded jacket, navy pants & matching mittens and scarf. She has her own mount - a Dapple Gray hobby horse, with a red stick. He is hand sculpted from stone clay & has a mane of natural fibre and a red halter to match Santa's steed. The cart is a beauty - sturdy and well made. It's a surrey style with a wooden roof held up by decorative wrought iron pole. It has wonderful wooden, spoked wheels and a removable wood seat. It has been repainted (of course) - crackled, antiqued, with some decorative touches to fancy it up. On the back, t is a grape vine wreath with a few red berries & ice crystals. The dimensions are as follows: OVERALL - 19" long x 6.5" wide x 12" high Santa: 9" (standing) Child: 4" Hobby Horse: 5" Tree: 7: Cart: 13" long x 6.5" wide x 12" high Wheels: 5" Horse: 8"long, 3.5" wide, 8.5" tall If you're wanting Santa t by Christmas, t should be time to get him t via UPS - if he goes out next Monday (depending of course, w he's going ). I guess the time has come for me to come out of my Studio & start making Christmas preparations for my own kids & grandbabes. So this likely will be the last creation for a while. (unless some magic happens somew along the line & I'm able to find another 10 hours in each day). I so wanted to finish a piece that's been living in my head for a year.
