This is a unique, 45 year-old (1962) First Day of Issue cachet honoring the issue of the 4 cent Mercury Commemorative Stamp. It is special in that it is one of the few examples of all signatures of the Mercury 7 Astronauts being on one piece during the early years of the program. This piece has been scrutinized by many collectors and the consensus is that the Carpenter autograph is genuine. Many feel that Shepard's and Glenn's are also authentic. It is up to the buyer to decide as to the whether the latter two autographs are genuine. As to the rest, t is no doubt that they are auto-pens. The envelope is yellowed and in good shape. T is a tape mark on the rear w it appears that someone taped the flap years ago. This cannot be seen from the front. This cachet was issued the day John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth Another unique quality of this cachet is that it was posted from Cape Canaveral about 45 minutes after Glenn landed. It makes you want to think they were waiting for his safe return before they posted these things.
