Up for bids is a CUSTOM Athearn HO Scale GP38-2 high hood version decorated in the Norfolk Southern horsehead scheme, road number 5218. This locomotive started out as a low nose early Athearn RTR GP38-2 shell that was stripped, had a Cannon and Company high short hood added. The shell was detailed with dual BLMA RCL Stands, two Details West non-operating rotary beacons, a Details West Firecracker Antenna, Details West NS style bell, Details West MU Cables, grab irons, metal lift rings, and two Details West horns, both of which are per the prototype. The shell was then custom painted and decaled using Microscale decals. I then added Smokey Valley brass handrails and stanchions (my first attempt, which came out very well, but not perfect). The then completed shell was added to an Athearn Bluebox GP38-2 frame with the correct size fuel tank. I then hardwired the motor with a Digitrax 9 pin harness, making this model DCC Ready. I then painted the wheel faces rust and added Kadee #5 knuckle couplers. I had not started weathering this unit, but I did give the roof a "worn" look with thinned white paint, which turned out very well. This locomotive is in good running order, but like all Blue Box locomotives, makes a little noise. It is included in a padded Athearn Blue Box.
