Collectable Horse Brass of the Beautiful coastal Town of Weymouth. Weymouth is situated in the south of the county of Dorset on the south coast of England. Weymouth Bay is part of the English Channel and was known as "England's Bay of Naples". What we think of as Weymouth today when we think of the seaside or the town centre, is in fact Melcombe Regis. They were once two separate places, their boundary being the harbour, with Weymouth on the south side and Melcombe Regis on the north. There was much feuding between the two over the trading rights of the harbour, but they became officially united in 1571 when Elizabeth I granted a Royal Charter. They then became the Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. Weymouth was once a busy port especially for the British Navy in the times of the Spanish Armada. The origin of the Horse Brass goes back many centuries, when man first used the horse extensively on the land. The superstitions prevalent at this time required a symbol to protect the horse from accident or injury and Horse Brasses were believed to have the supernatural powers to ward off evil spirits and prevent catastrophe.
