The gain control combines passive padding at the lowest gain settings with feedback network changes at higher settings. You can see that gain switch's center position is marked "0dB". This corresponds to enough gain to bring a nominal input level up to 0dB. For the mic input the nominal level is -50dB, so in the 0 position you actually have 50dB of gain, and a maximum gain (in the +25db) setting of 75dB..
