Authentic Antique Museum Quality Bentwood Field Cradle. This is a true antique! Hangs on the frame...2 wheels on the frame allow for it to be rolled. Cradle easily swings for a long time. This is a beauty in excellent condition. In the beginning of the Victorian era in Europe and the United States, cradles were commonly made in brass, cane, wicker and bentwood and were used in the farm fields for newborns so the mothers could continue their work in the fields, thus called a "field cradle." They are popular today with those who collect dolls and toys. Children aren't placed in these cradles today because they aren't safe.Frame measures 45" long and 23 1/4" across the bottom. Cradle measures 40 1/2" x 21 3/4." Wheels are excellent, everything is , no need for repair. I believe this was originally not painted. Looks like it might have just one coat, however. I have found my original notes from the owner of this cradle. She told me her husband's mother brought this cradle from Germany in 1882 and later settled in Napanee, Indiana in 1885. It was in his grandmother's attic for a very long time. The last name of the original owner was Klotz, who married Kurtz. This would make a wonderful museum piece!Questions, please ask.
