U. S. COAST GUARD 200 MM BU-48 BUOY / AID TO NAVIGATION LANTERN WHITE. c.1960's. Large, authentic vintage lantern was used as a buoy or pier light as an aid to navigation. This striking original lantern contains a large, clear 360° glass Fresnel lens. Casting is heavy duty cast aluminum, and is marked in the casting; "U.S.C.G." BU 048. Lantern is 200 mm size and stands about 20"; to top without bird spike. Overall diameter approximately 10.5". Lens measures 7" high by approximately 8 5/8" " outside diameter. Total weight is 18 lbs. Lens has one very small chip, but no wear from normal use. In other words, the Fresnel lens is in near perfect condition. We can only conclude that this was replaced with a new lens. Complete including tie rods and top bird spike but without lamp changer. A great lamp for your den, or for the wharf, barn or driveway and will be striking when lit. It is most unusual to find these lanterns of the early Coast Guard history. Included below are a few links about Fresnel Lenses and the care of them.
