This game, complete with original 2d edition rules is one of the first to simulate combat at the most basic level. It began a revolution in conflict simulation with its realistic portrayal of small arms, crew served weapons, and virtually every facet of infantry combat. Even more realistic than the earlier "Panzer Blitz/Panzer Leader" (all being sold this week - see my other auctions) in its basic approach to tactical level combat, this 1977 release simulates at the squad, platoon, or section level many important actions between the Germans and Russians or Germans and Americans in their deadly battles in the decisive land campaign in World War II. Many significant actions are simulated in quick battles that seldom bring more than a battalion of forces onto the board. The game contains 12 individual scenarios whose titles evoke some memorable infantry combats. They include: Guards Counterattack, 10/42; The Tractor Works, 10/42; The Streets of Stalingrad. 10/42; The Hedgehog of Priepsk, 11/41; Hill 621, 7/44; Escape From Velikiye Luki, 1/43; Buchholtz Station, 12/44; The Bitche Salient, 1/45; The Cannes Strongpoint, 7/44; and Hitdorf on the Rhine, 4/45, among others. The game has been supplemented by dozens of additional scenarios published down through the years in the General magazine and further game modules such as "Cross of Iron" and "GI: Anvil of Victory" (all being sold - see my other auctions) that bring in additional forces and weapons and units from other combatant nations. Squad Leader became virtually a cottage industry with many follow-on products spun off of this system. It is an interesting simulation for both sides as players must cover areas with fields of fire, deploy obstacles, and maneuver their forces to defeat the enemy in fast and furious action simulating small units in real combat. Battles are evenly matched and can be rapidly fought. Both sides have a fair chance to accomplish specified victory conditions and are usually in the game to the last turn. While the game mechanics are intuitive, they are extensive and not for the faint of heart. The complexities are necessary to fully simulate the vast variety of weapons, equipment, terrain, and situations WWII infantry soldiers encountered on the battlefield.I have inventoried every piece of this game against a master set. The counter set is complete to the last counters and components needed for play. The loose pieces are separated by contingent in ziplock bags. The rules are a bit worn but the charts and tables are in good shape. As noted, I am including a full sized copy of the 4 th edition rules so you will have the latest to use for rules clarification. The game box and mapboards are in good shape with minor handling wear. The box has a a couple splits on corners I have repaired. Two dice are present but are not original. The game can easily be played solitaire but is designed for play by two players.
