ALL COMICS ARE BAGGED/BOARDED.In 1992, the editors of DC were already planning the 71-part Knightfall saga which would result in Bruce Wayne being crippled, replaced, then eventually returned to the role of Batman. To pull it off , they needed a character who would fill in as Batman, before being driven over the edge and requiring Wayne to wrest the mantle of Batman from him. That character was to be John Paul Valley-Azrael.Valley was an unassuming computer science student whose father had been the latest in a line of holy assassins for the secret Order of Saint Dumas. The Order's assassin was called Azrael-the angel of death-and had passed its role from father to son for generations. Unwittingly, Jean Paul had already been trained to assume the role through a subconscious sort of training called "the System." When his father died, the shy computer scientist suddenly discovered within himself a knowledge of advanced martial techniques-and a violent destiny as the new Azrael.
