A fine 19th Century watercolour showing soldiers on parade near the Great Temple at Baalbek in Lebanon, with onlookers on the hillside above. The painting is unsigned. It is inscribed on the support with the location and with an indistinct date (1827 or 1847 - I think). The provenance is an album of early to mid 19th Century watercolours of a topographical nature. The artist was clearly very competent and the influence of the Middle Eastern topographers such as David Roberts and Thomas Hartley Cromek is evident. Condition is quite good - the colours are wonderfully fresh, the painting having been preserved in an album. There is some staining at the top corners where it has been glued to the support and two or three specks of foxing in the sky; otherwise just a bit of mild toning at the edges and the odd minor blemish. Size: 5 x 7.5 inches approx. - unframed SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS FOR MORE WATERCOLOURS FROM THIS COLLECTION P&P: UK free; OVERSEAS - please ask for quote
