(Ages newborn and up) These books have plastic pages, and are designed to be a bath toy as well as educational and fun. What Floats? - Babies and toddlers delight in discovering the world around them. You can reinforce and expand the learning adventures of the lion cub in What Floats? by pointing out the different animals and objects, and their activities. Young children learn primarily by using their senses - including the tactile sense. To help your baby learn about flotation, take a dry washcloth and lay it across the water. Watch it float! But, oh, as the cloth gets wetter (and heavier than the water it displaces) it will sink to the bottom of the tub. You can also use a plastic bottle to demonstrate the same reaction. The repetitive refrain in Mimi's Toes - "See Mama wash Mimi from her feet to her nose, then come back to tickle Mimi's toes" will delight your child as he or she learns to anticipate these words each time your read the story. Help your child to identify parts of the body while listening to the story of Jane washing Mimi from head to toe. Invite your child to share in Mimi's bath time fun by pointing out each part of his or her own body that corresponds to the area that Mimi is having washed.
