The Master Railroad Series from Bachman (391052401460) item #82154, steam engine with tender in set with additional tender.Steam locomotives reliance on water has always been aconsideration when planning operation. An auxiliary water tender, or"canteens, holds additional water for steam allowing for long-distance operations without stoppingfor water, thereby increasing efficiency. Most auxiliary tenders alsohave storage spaces for tools, parts, etc.The majority ofauxiliary tenders were surplus or spare, and were convertedspecifically for auxiliary tender use. Some major Class I railroadsback in the steam age used auxiliary tenders. Perhaps the finestexample was the Norfolk & Western's use of the tenders. N&Wused auxiliary water tenders on freight, coal, and passenger trains.
