Available for purchase this week is this Keystone Casey railroad lantern marked on the rim of the lid “B&OR.R.” and “Loco”, denoting that this lantern was assigned to locomotive service. Every locomotive was mandated by Federal law to have two lanterns available in the cab, fueled and ready to use, one equipped with a clear globe, and one with a red. Heavy fines were levied on the railroad if inspectors found a locomotive without its required pair of lanterns. To discourage brakeman from “borrowing” these essential items, the railroads tried different methods. One of these was the “loco” marking you see on this lantern. The lantern itself is in excellent used condition. It has a nearly uniform patina of extremely light pitting, which can be seen in the accompanying photos. This is common to older Caseys, and it’s so light it should not be an issue, but should be noted for accuracy. The frame has no dents, rust, corrosion, bent wires, broken solder joints, or other distractions. The patented “Casey” mechanism works smoothly and is complete.
