"Banshee" Giclee By Olivia De Berardinis Signed by artist Olivia De Berardinis and model Julie Strain # 42 of 50 I had been longing for a quality Olivia Giclee, and, after an exhaustive search, I finally obtained this piece at Mayfield Galleries in Texas in I believe 2000 or 2001. It is signed and numbered in graphite (#42 of 50) by artist Olivia De Berardenis and reference model Julie Strain (Julie signed with her trademark "heart"). I have loved this artwork ever since I saw it used for the cover of the May, 1997 issue of Heavy Metal, and the reproduction of this Giclee is outstanding. I spared no expense having this professionally framed, with triple PH neutral matting (computer color matched to the background of the artwork), archived UV glass, and ornately carved black wood. I don't think I need to tell you that I am very sorry to see this go, and I will be taking quite a loss monitarily with this auction, but times are difficult, and I have priced this to sell quickly. Olivia Giclees do not come up for bid often, so be sure not to miss this one. Framed Giclee measures 32" x 37" x 2" deep and weighs 14 LBS. What is a Giclee? A giclee (zhee-CLAY), is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity, high tech reproduction done on a special large format printer. Usually on inkjet canvas or fine art paper, giclees are often made from photographic images of fine art paintings in order to produce high quality, permanent fine art reproductions. The extra-fine image resolution possible in this inkjet printing process permits retention of a high degree of fine detail from the original fine art image, rendering deeply saturated colors with broad ranges of tonal values. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in nearly every way. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually 'continuous tone', rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography, and details are crisper. Lithography uses tiny dots of four colors--cyan, magenta, yellow and black to fool the eye into seeing various hues and shades. Colors are "created" by printing different size dots of these four colors. Giclees use inkjet technology, but far more sophisticated than your desktop printer. The process employs six colors--light cyan, cyan, light magenta, magenta, yellow and black (sometimes TWO blacks)--of lightfast (fade resistant), pigmented inks and finer, more numerous, replaceable printheads resulting in a wider color gamut, and the ability to use various media to print on. The ink is sprayed onto the page, actually mixing the color on the page to create truer shades and hues. They are priced midway between original art and regular limited edition lithographs. Limited edition litho prints are usually produced in editions of or more, all at once; but giclees rarely exceed 50-100 high-quality reproductions, one at a time. Giclees were originally developed as a proofing system for traditional lithographic printing presses, but it soon became apparent that the presses were having a hard time delivering the quality and brilliant color of the giclee proofs. Giclees evolved into the new darlings of the art world. They are coveted by collectors for their fidelity and quality, and desired by galleries and artists alike. Giclees are, quite simply, the closest thing you can ever have to the original artwork itself. I never went through the trouble of obtaining a COA for this, as I never thought I would ever have to part with it.
