Steinbeck became one of Deim's closest and trusted friends. Early in her career, he encouraged Deim to move to the Monterey Peninsula where he thought she would flourish in a rich community of artists. In Carmel, she became part Steinbeck's close circle of friends, which included other leading literary and artistic figures of the 1930's. Twice, John Steinbeck gave Deim and her husband, Elwood Graham (they later divorced), money so they could travel to Mexico to paint. On one of these trips, Judith discovered Patzcuaro, a small remote Mexican village. Later in life, Deim would return to Patzcuaro, purchase a ranch and settle there. A Portrait Of Inspiration In 1941 Steinbeck moved his writing to Deim's studio where she painted his portrait while he wrote Sea of Cortez. Deim became known for this modernistic style of painting before turning read more
