If you like this item, don't hesitate to make an offer! Offered for your consideration is an ultra rare 1850’s to 1870’s era – very large 16 ½” tall by 9 ½” wide silver plate six bottle cruet stand – cruet bottle holder made for a hotel by the Barclay & Cary Silver Company that was located in New York City. This is the first and only such server I have ever seen like this and I’m positive there were not many of these made, if even, others.

Historically, Barclay & Cary was not a very large company and was only in business for a short time. There silver pieces are far and few between and represent some of the finest craftsmanship and artisan work. I cannot locate hardly any information at all on this very short lived company, but they did indeed exist and made some wonderful silver wares, in addition to, some limited hotel wares as well.

There quality was stunning, as in the case of this most fantastic holder, it features four deer heads around the bottle portion that are done in a most highly detailed design. The four legs are made in the shape of a Victorian woman with clawed feet – claw foot and ball at the bottom of each leg. There is also a very ornate finial on the topside of the base. The lower portion of the base is decorated in the most stunning “Grecian” style mount.

The holder has not been cleaned and comes in its original condition. It has the applied oval BARCLAY & CARY NEW YORK” hallmark. It has the usual light usage scratches, silver plate wear in some spots (especially around the circular holder), minor pitting, and some light corrosion in some spot. But overall, this piece is stunning for its age. The holder also has some slight bending to the legs, etc., but overall, stands up as straight as it can be. Also, the handle was made to unscrew off.

This set would have been used in the dining rooms, restaurant – café, or even for room service of the hotel and used in connection with its hotel china and glassware for table service. It would have held six glass bottles for oil, vinegar, and other bottles to be used most likely at a round hotel or restaurant table in the most formidable fashion. It is the vintage heavyweight Steamship, Restaurant, and Railraod silverplate.

If you have been looking for a very rare and early New York City Hotel / Restaurant silver serving item that was made by an early New York City silversmith, you might want to consider this piece for your collection.

A wonderful addition to your Home Decorating / Home Furnishing, Barclay and Cary, Boutique, or 19th Century Hotel Collection.
