BARNETT NEWMAN Original Abstract Expressionist Lithograph Vintage 1967 COAArtist: � BARNETT NEWMAN (American, � 1905 - 1970)Title:� � "Illustration for Sleeping on the Wing, 1967" Medium:� Original Lithograph; SIGNED Size:� Sheet Size: 23 x � 30.5cms Edition:� Edition limited to 2500 impressions Paper:� Mohawk, Superfine Smooth, by Crafton Graphic Company Publisher:� Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York Catalogue Raisonne: � � Barnett Newman: A Catalogue Raisonne by Richard Shiff, Carol Mancusi-Ungaro and Heidi Colsman-Freyberger� Reference:� Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) Memory of Feelings, Frank O’Hara, 1967 Certificate of Authenticity, with copy of colophon, included Text from MOMA: ”Each artist was assigned a poem to illustrate as [the artist] was fit.� Preliminary layouts of the type pages were prepared in advance by the book’s designer, Susan Draper Tundisi, and the artists were permitted to work anywhere on the page they wanted, even under the printed poem itself.� The artists were given translucent plastic sheets on which to draw, either in black or sepia, or both.� Placing the sheets over the layouts, the artists indicated how their work would relate to the margins and the type.� The artists could use any medium that would hold or be fixed on the plastic surfaces – pencil, ink, charcoal, plastic-based paints, collage, transfer rubbings, etc.� . . . Since the homogeneous plastic material is not made of crushed fibers, like paper, light is conducted through it without distortion.� Thus, when the plastic mylar is brought into direct contact with a sheet of photographic film and exposed to light, it produces a negative that captures virtually all the subtle tonalities of the artist’s intent.� This is then placed in contact with a light-sensitive surface of an aluminum lithographic plate and the image is then transferred into paper.”� Mary Corlett, writing in the Roy Lichtenstein Catalogue Raisonne, states as follows:� ”Each artist was given a copy of the text of the appropriate poem, in galley-proof form with page layouts, along with a sheet of plastic, called Copyrite, on which to draw.� The translucent plastic could be placed directly over the layout to execute the drawing. Plates were then made from the drawings on plastic.� The portfolio of loose lithographs includes approximately 46 images in the unbound portfolio, as published.”� � The Art was selected by Robert Motherwell, and based on the poems of Frank O'Hara, who worked at MoMA prior to his tragic death. Through Motherwell and O'Hara's involvement MoMa were able to get contributions from the leading lights of The New York School of Abstract Expressionists, including: Nell blaine; Norman Bluhm; Joe Brainard; John Button; Giorgio Cavallon; � Allan D'Arcangelo; � Marisol; � Helen Frankenthaler; � Jane Freilicher; � Michael Goldberg; � Philip Guston; � Grace Hartigan; � Al Held; � Jasper Johns; � Matsumi Kanemitsu; � Alex Katz; � Elaine de Kooning; � Willem de Kooning; � Lee Krasner; � Alfred Leslie; � Roy Lichtenstein; � Joan Mitchell; � Robert Motherwell; � Reuben Nakian; � Barnett Newman; � Claes Oldenburg; � Robert Rauschenberg; � Larry Rivers; � Niki de Saint Phalle; � and Jane Wilson. � � The original artworks were thought to be lost, but was rediscovered in the 90's when MoMA issued a commercially printed book commemorating the publication. � Each artist produced imagery for one poem, the purchaser will receive all the sheets relevant to that poem and a copy of the numbered colophon as provenance. ABOUT THE ARTIST: � Barnett Newman (January 29, 1905 – July 4, 1970) was an American artist. He is seen as one of the major figures in abstract expressionism and one of the foremost of the color field painters. His paintings are existential in tone and content, explicitly composed with the intention of communicating a sense of locality, presence, and contingency.
