PLATE 19: Neomaenis Apodus (Walbaum). Schoolmaster, CajiAbout four-Fifths Natural Size This is a rare antique pre 1900 chromolithograph. A lithograph is created by drawing an image onto a stone (lithography = "stone-drawing") or metal plate using a grease crayon or a greasy ink called tusche. The process is based on the principle that grease and water do not mix. To create a lithograph, the stone or plate is washed with water --which is repelled by the crayon-- and then with ink --which is absorbed by the crayon. The image is printed onto the paper from the stone or plate, which can be re-inked many times without wear. A chromolithograph is a colored lithograph, with at least three colors, in which each color is printed from a separate stone and where the image is composed from those colors. !! It would make an excellent wall accent when matted and framed, especially in a group. Nice gift for the deep sea fishing outdoorsman; great decor for yacht or sailboat. Description of Fish: The schoolmaster is one of the most richly coloured and beautiful of the snappers, and is withal a very interesting and attractive fish. It is known from Bahia northward through the West Indies to southern Florida. It sometimes strays in the Gulf Stream to Woods Hole. It is found at Key West and in Indian River, but is not common in either place. It read more
