57 Photographs of Bastogne, Belgium Immediately Before & After the Battle of the Bulge During World War II Rare Personal Images of Places & People ...days before and after the famous battle between the 101st Airborne, elements of the 9th & 10th Armor Division and the German Wehrmacht in December of 1944 and January 1945 Historic Rare Collection of Fifty-seven (57) 4x6 Photos Hitler called their massive 1944 German Winter Counter-Offensive through the Ardennes Forest, “Watch on the Rhine”. The Americans and Allies called it “ The Battle of the Bulge.” On December 16 th 1944 the Wehrmacht broke out towards Antwerp with two Panzer Armies and 600,000 men, hoping to split the Allies. American troops scrambled to put up a desperate defense, sustaining 80,000 casualties: Dead, Wounded and Captured. The world focused on the crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium, where the 101 st Airborne and combat teams from the 9th & 10th Armored Division held out during Christmas until the arrival of General Patton's 3rd Army. These personal photographs were taken by HQ soldiers already stationed in Bastogne Belgium in the days leading up to the battle and massive artillery bombardment.
