The U.S. Naval Gun Factory produced Mark 37’s by converting various U.S. Navy Bausch & Lomb pattern 7X50 binoculars (in this case a Mark 26, Mod. 6 7X50) to 9X63 configuration. The conversion entailed adding 63mm objective lens extensions to the 7X50’s objective barrels. Prisms were anti-reflective coated if the original binocular did not already have them. Many were fitted with large flexible Baker eyeshields to block extraneous light and to protect the observer’s eyes during artillery discharge. Seeger reports (grey book, page 341) the binocular was intended to be used by the captain and fire control officers of battleships. Its optical performance is quite good. This is an extremely heavy binocular and not one to be carried for long. But its weight nicely steadies the binocular during use and contributes to an excellent view.
