The Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway was formed in 1911 as the Bay State Street Railway Co., renamed in 1919. The Bay State Street Railway Co. was formed out of the merger of the Boston & Northern Street Railway, operating north of Boston, and the Old Colony Street Railway Co., operating south of Boston. The Old Colony Street Railway Co. was basically formed in 1901 as the merger of the Brockton Street Railway Co., South Shore & Boston Street Railway, West Roxbury & Roslindale Street Railway, and Globe Street Railway Co.
